Product Characteristics:
Empower Frontline Technicians to Resolve Issues
The Fluke Networks LinkRunner Pro 1000 (LRPRO-1000 | LRPRO-KIT) builds upon the legacy of previous LinkRunner models. It is designed to provide desktop support and network technicians with a simple, dedicated tool for troubleshooting the most common PC user and device connectivity issues.
Networks have evolved rapidly, making connectivity issues more complex than ever. Higher bandwidth demands have accelerated Gigabit Ethernet adoption. Increased security threats necessitate stricter controls like 802.1X. Technologies like VoIP and WLAN increase reliance on Power over Ethernet (PoE). The LinkRunner Pro recognizes these changes and equips technicians to meet these new challenges.
Expedite Ticket Resolution with Professional Link Status Reports
Resolving trouble tickets without test documentation can be a frustrating and time-consuming process. Inter-team disputes and redundant testing are common time-wasters. In today's focus on operational efficiency, IT departments cannot afford this waste. The LinkRunner Pro eliminates blame-shifting and unnecessary testing by generating objective, professional link status reports that can be printed or forwarded electronically.
1. Ping Key Devices
The LinkRunner Pro provides a dedicated tool enabling technicians to easily test LAN and link connectivity, while offering flexibility for configuration in diverse network environments. Obtain an IP address via DHCP from the network and ping the default gateway and DNS servers. Alternatively, manually configure up to 10 IP addresses to monitor response times for other devices and servers. IP addresses can be entered directly into the tool or downloaded from a PC using the LinkRunner Connect software.
2. Test Cable Wiremap
Although modern cables are more reliable, cable faults remain a primary cause of basic connectivity issues. The LinkRunner Pro detects all fundamental cable faults, including miswires, crosses, reversals, opens, shorts, and split pairs. It also accelerates cable troubleshooting by using built-in TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry) to determine the distance to open and short faults.
3. Locate and Identify Cables
The LinkRunner Pro provides technicians with two methods for optimized cable location and identification. IntelliTone digital tone technology and the port flash function can be used to:
Locate cables within live networks
Identify individual cables within bundles
Find ports on patch panels
Visually identify ports on the connected switch
Additionally, the optional Cable ID accessory for the LinkRunner Pro can test and identify up to 6 cables simultaneously.
4. Verify Switch Port (CDP/EDP/LLDP)
A critical step in resolving connectivity issues is identifying the switch port to which a user is connected. The LinkRunner Pro is the first connectivity tool to support the new IEEE Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP), in addition to Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) and Extreme Discovery Protocol (EDP). This allows technicians to accurately and quickly locate the connected switch port for rapid problem resolution. Within seconds, the LinkRunner Pro displays the mask, model, address, slot, and port of the nearest LLDP-capable device. The new LLDP standard has been adopted by Cisco, Avaya, Extreme, Nortel, Mitel, and many other vendors.
5. Verify 802.1X Settings
Due to the convenience and security it offers, 802.1X is being rapidly adopted on wired networks. The LinkRunner Pro not only detects 802.1X but can also authenticate on 802.1X networks. The built-in LinkRunner Connect software is used to select the EAP type, provide credentials, and enter passwords. Using the LinkRunner Pro, technicians can quickly resolve 802.1X conflicts and rapidly restore user network connectivity.
6. Troubleshoot Gigabit Links
Most new PCs and switches now support Gigabit Ethernet. Consequently, Gigabit desktop connectivity is spreading rapidly even without coordinated rollout efforts. Network users often expect this performance simply because their equipment supports it, without necessarily requiring the bandwidth. Complaints arise when Gigabit link speeds are not achieved. However, as traditional frontline tools lack Gigabit testing capabilities, these complaints often lead to trial-and-error troubleshooting and unnecessary escalations.
The LinkRunner Pro is the first dedicated frontline tool for maintaining Gigabit network links. This means frontline technicians can now resolve Gigabit link issues without escalating them to higher support tiers. The LinkRunner Pro displays the capabilities of the connected device and the actual negotiated speed/duplex status. If a device has 1000 Mb/s capability but negotiates at only 100 Mb/s, configuration settings may need adjustment, or a lower-grade patch cord may require replacement.
7. Check PoE Service
From VoIP phones to wireless LAN access points, many network devices now receive Power over Ethernet (PoE) via twisted-pair data cables. Therefore, device power loss has become a network issue, not just a device issue. Modern network tools require the capability to detect power issues that may prevent devices from operating correctly. The LinkRunner Pro supports the standard 802.3af method and can detect the voltage level provided by the wire pairs – whether from an endspan (switch) or a midspan power injector.
